Ep. 11, Season 4 "Literary License to Kill"

Katie's sister Bethany fills in for Andy this week, and there must be something in the Coke the girls are drinking because they cannot hold themselves together. (Oh yeah, it's rum.) Although the editing is rough and the Garage Band version needs updating, a good time is had by all, except Andy who had to edit this monster. Somehow, this—the penultimate episode of the season—provokes discussion of alcoholism, "boogeyman cleavage," and, of course, Jesus.

UPDATE: Don't worry. We're not dead. We're just having trouble letting go. If we record the podcast for the season finale, then it's really over, isn't it? Check back Sunday night. We'll be ready to let go by then.

And, just because y'all are awesome fans, we're bringing Bethany back for a special Season 4 wrap-up podcast to be available on Sunday, April 8. It'll be a three-way you won't soon forget!

I agree with Jodi's lack of ass. But then again, everyone in that show (except RR) kinda lacks an ass.

About Tina and Bette, you mentioned that you felt conflicted... my question is why. You see? I understand the Tina/Bette attraction in the first two seasons of the show. But my breaking point for that relationship was Tina doing Henry in Bette's bed. Since then, I cannot stand the thought of seeing them again as a romantic couple. I know I'm in the minority.

So, why I ask you? Why, after everything that has happened, does that relationship have such strong support? Is it about safety? Because it is safe to believe that love can conquer all? Is it because of chemistry? Is it nostalgia?

I'm not looking for conflict, but an honest opinion, because I'm working right now on a paper that tries to draw a correlation between what we accept in a relationship in fiction versus what we accept in real life.

Can I request Bethany joins you in all Podcast (along with your dear hubby of course)? It was pretty hillarious when you compared yourself with the Porter sisters.

I can't speak for all the Bette and Tina fans. I'm not even sure I myself am a fan, but my feelings about them are, I think, entirely about comfort and history and chemistry. It's funny that we like Bette and Tina because it's safe when the truth is that the proverbial rug has been pulled out from under them more than any other tenet of the show. That's another aspect to the loyalty to Bette and Tina. They are a constant on a show decidedly lacking in constants. Like we said in the podcast, they were the core of the group. I personally like Alice as the core better and I hope that concept gets developed as the show progresses. At this point, I guess we're talking about next season since this one is all but wrapped up. Positioning Bette and Tina the unit as the core puts a lot of pressure on the couple.

I watched some clips from the season finale at sho.com, and I realized that I like the rapport between Bette and Tina. It's comfortable and easy. Bette has come close to that with Jodi but it's still too soon. I like Jodi, and I think she's good for my Bette. Bette and Tina aren't the same people they were in season 1, where all that nostalgia comes from. Tina especially has evolved. Who can blame Bette for being perfect from the start? :) If they do get back together, it will be a different kind of relationship.

Your paper topic fascinates me. I am always interested in the interplay between our fiction and our real lives. The problem with understanding Bette and Tina is that we get just a glimpse of their relationship, but we spend every single moment in our own relationships.

Thanks for your insightful and challenging comments.

I saw your comment on afterellen.com, so I thought I would listen to your podcast. I loved it. I have never listened to you and your husband before, but if it is half as good as you and your sister, I am hooked. I am a 35 year-old lesbian. I have been in an 8 year relationship. I live in Las Vegas. I am having an L-Word party tonite. We are watching the whole season to get ready for tomorrow's final. I am gonna play your podcast. Thanks--Julie. You can find me on myspace.

Hello, you two!

I didn't listen to the podcast for this episode yet, but I've just finished the very first one you two did, and I thought it was great. I saw your comment on afterellen.com and just thought, 'what the heck, I'll check it out!', and I just loved it.

It is great to see what two straight people think of it, and to actually know that there are indeed straight people who love the show.

Just subscribed to it on iTunes. Do keep up the good work.

Love from Brazil.

I completely missed that the manager's name was Larry Kenner, lol.

Props to Beth! That wasn't bad at all.

Also, you will have more listeners now (well, you already do, but moreso) cause I'm finally telling my sister and her friends.
