The Great Reversal

Matthew 16:24-26 and 20:1-6 both deal with the great reversal: the amazing ways God changes the first to the last, and the last to the first.
How can we learn from the things that puzzle us? How do we reconcile the idea that God wants to use and reward what we deem worthless?
