Up to this point in John’s gospel is Jesus’ claim of deity primarily to His detractors: 1. “I Am the Bread of Life” – the giver/sustainer of eternal life. 2. “I Am the Light of the world” – who leads the way and is the source of salvation. 3. “I am the Door and the Good Shepherd” – also the way and source of salvation. In the final “I am” statements Jesus now makes His claim are primarily among His disciples. Jesus wants His followers to have the conviction of who He is, even if they are not fully comprehending the fullness of His claims. As noted in the previous lesson: these claims are meant to build the faith of His disciples before He leaves them to rule from heaven. Cp. 1 Pet. 3:21-22
