Advertising spots

In order to pay for your podcast, we insert small advertisements into it. AD Spot specifies a place, where matching Ad will be inserted. If you do not specify AD Spots, our system will automatically define when advertisement will be inserted.

There are two ways to place advertising spots into episodes:

  1. With the help of MyPodcast recorder;
  2. Via special web-form for uploading episodes.

If you are using MyPodcast recorder interface for specifying AD Spots is built right in. MyPodcast recorder makes it easy to place the spots during record time or later during playback time. When you use MyPodcast Recorder, it automatically sets up this field. MyPodcast recorder may be used not only for recording episodes but also for upload of your audio files to MyPodcast.com with the ad spots allocated earlier. If you are uploading audio files (see list of supported format in this article) manually via our web form (for advanced or non-Windows users) you will have to specify a list with advertising spots on the form.

We also enforce some basic rules on advertisement placement such as how many advertisements will be inserted and what are restrictions on AD Spot placement. This is done to ensure that advertisement appears at a reasonable time and provide advertisers with some consistency.

You do not have to know those rules. MyPodcast recorder will check them for you and advise you if there are any problems. Our system will double-check your setting and will try to fix them if you make any mistake. For example if you do not specify enough AD Spots for your long podcast, next advertisement will be added 20 minutes after last AD Spot you specified. Here are the rules we use:

  • Each 20 minutes of podcast playback requires 1 advertisement spot.
  • Each ad associated with 20-minutes period of your podcast must be aired during this period or earlier.

Here are few samples:

  • 1:00 - exactly 1 minute after episode start
  • 0:25 - 25 seconds after episode start
  • 0:27.5 - 27 seconds and a half
  • 28:93.263 - specifies minutes, seconds and milliseconds

Here is a number of valid scenarios:

  1. If your episode is not longer than 20 minutes - insert one ad anywhere - start, end or middle of your episode.

  2. If your episode > 20 minutes but ≤ 40 minutes - you need to insert 2 advertisements. One of them must be aired during first 20 minutes. If you specify time for only one AD Spot, both advertisements will be inserted there.

Normally if your podcast is under 40 minutes, you can place one spot in the middle of the show and the other at the end.

    Long episodes

    Length AD Spots Note
    20 minutes
    1 spots
Place it at the end or middle of your episode
40 minutes 2 spots Place one in the middle and the other at the end
60 minutes 3 spots Place one at the start, one in the middle and 3rd at the end
80 minutes 4 spots Place 2 spots at the same time-code during first 20 minutes, 3rd spot in the middle, 4th at the end - you have 3 breaks but first one is longer
    20*x minutes x spots

  3. If user has allocated less ad spots than required the additional one will be placed automatically without any notification sent to the user. Should there be more ad spots than needed the excessive ones will not be aired (e.g. if user has recorded 10-minutes long episode with the following ad spots: 03:00, 05:00, 07:00 there will remain only one of them: 03:00).

  4. All ad spots are read out and sorted (e.g. if user has allocated on the web-form the following ad spots: 20:00, 30:00, 05:00 their order will be changed to: 05:00, 20:00, 70:00).

  5. It is also verified whether the ad spots are placed within the right range. If ad spots are placed incorrectly, we ignore them and apply our rule: all ad spots are separated by 20 minutes. So if we have for example a 50-minutes long episode it will contain 3 ad spots: 00:00, 20:00, 40:40.

  6. If the time set beyond episode limits ad is placed at the end of the episode (e.g. 38-minutes episode has been recorded and the following ad spots have been allocated: 16:00, 25:00, 40:00, the last ad spot is placed incorrectly and will be changed to 38:00).

  7. The ad is not repeated within an episode (e.g. we have a 50-minutes long episode with only one ad and the following ad spots allocated: 03:00, 15:00, 38:00 in this case only the ad will be aired only once at 03:00 the other ad spots will be removed).

  8. If you want all or several ads be aired at the same time you can specify the time on the web-form: 10:00, 10:00, 10:00, with the help of MyPodcast recorder ad spots can be allocated this way: 10:01, 10:02, 10:03.
